چکیده

This paper proposes a strategy for the detection and triangulation of structural anomalies in solid media. The method revolves around the construction of sparse representations of the medium’s dynamic response, obtained by learning instructive dictionaries which form a suitable basis for the response data. The resulting sparse coding problem is recast as a modified dictionary learning task with additional spatial sparsity constraints enforced on the atoms of the learned dictionaries, which provides them with a prescribed spatial topology that is designed to unveil anomalous regions in the physical domain. The proposed methodology is model agnostic, i.e., it forsakes the need for a physical model and requires virtually no a priori knowledge of the structure’s material properties, as all the inferences are exclusively informed by the data through the layers of information that are available in the intrinsic salient structure of the material’s dynamic response. This characteristic makes the approach powerful for anomaly identification in systems with unknown or heterogeneous property distribution, for which a model is unsuitable or unreliable. The method is validated using both synthetically generated data and experimental data acquired using a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer.

Unsupervised Behavior-Specific Dictionary Learning for Abnormal Event Detection

Abnormal event detection has been an important issue in video surveillance applications. Due to the huge amount of surveillance data, only a small proportion could be loaded during the training. As a result, there is a high chance of incomplete normal patterns in the training data, which makes the task very challenging. Sparse representation, as one of solutions, has shown its effectiveness. Th...

Code Mixing: A Challenge for Language Identification in the Language of Social Media

In social media communication, multilingual speakers often switch between languages, and, in such an environment, automatic language identification becomes both a necessary and challenging task. In this paper, we describe our work in progress on the problem of automatic language identification for the language of social media. We describe a new dataset that we are in the process of creating, wh...

From Bilingual Dictionaries to Interlingual Document Representations

Mapping documents into an interlingual representation can help bridge the language barrier of a cross-lingual corpus. Previous approaches use aligned documents as training data to learn an interlingual representation, making them sensitive to the domain of the training data. In this paper, we learn an interlingual representation in an unsupervised manner using only a bilingual dictionary. We fi...

Arrays of (locality-sensitive) Count Estimators (ACE): High-Speed Anomaly Detection via Cache Lookups

Anomaly detection is one of the frequent and important subroutines deployed in large-scale data processing systems. Even being a well-studied topic, existing techniques for unsupervised anomaly detection require storing significant amounts of data, which is prohibitive from memory and latency perspective. In the big-data world existing methods fail to address the new set of memory and latency c...
